In 1982, I was 11 years old. I remember sitting on the floor of our living room watching a movie on tv called Gandhi. My mom and dad watched it with me and explained a side of the world… and life.. I had never seen. Being a young girl, raised in a pretty sheltered environment, I had never really been exposed to anything like it… Protests, violence, war.. I still remember how my heart hurt as I watched it. But, at the same time, something else was happening within me.
Inspiration.
A story of one man, and his belief that there could be a different way in the world. In the case of Gandhi, a non violent way to resolve injustices in the world. His commitment to his truth, even at the cost of, in many cases extreme pain, both physically and emotionally, was encouraging to me.
I learned so much as I watched the Television show that night. I learned about myself. I didn’t know it then, but Gandhi would be an inspiration to me throughout my life. A reminder to me of the importance of one voice. The value of being the change you wish to see, instead of just talking or bitching about it. The awareness that revenge is not the way.
His life and teachings guide me today in my own life and work.
So, today, October 2nd is the day Mohandas (later referred to by his followers as Mahatma, which means “the great-souled one) Gandhi was born. There are sooooo many things I have learned from this beautiful soul that I thought, in celebration of his birthday, I would share of few of them with you.

Every one of these quotes touches my heart, Sunny. An amazing example of how to honor oneself and others, bringing love and peace into reality. He took risks and we can, too, which will have us walking our true path. Thank you so much for sharing. Truly gave me a moment of memory as I recalled watching that movie, too.
