Native meaning of the moon:

Some Native American tribes called the August Moon the “Sturgeon Moon” because they knew that the sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this Full Moon. They also called August’s Moon the “Full Green Corn Moon.” Different tribes had different Moon name preferences. Other examples for August are: “Wheat Cut Moon” (San Ildefonso, and San Juan), “Moon When All Things Ripen” (Dakotah Sioux), and “Blueberry Moon” (Ojibwe). (Farmer’s Almanac)

“Women honor their sacred path when they acknowledge the intuitive knowing inherent in their receptive nature. In trusting the cycles of their bodies and allowing the feelings to emerge within them, women have been Seers and Oracles for their tribes for centuries.”

~Jamie Sams

Full Moon Practice: Create a Moon Mantra

Mantras are considered sacred sounds, words, or phrases repeated with an intention. Similar to affirmations, they can “unlock” creativity, engage intuition, and bring an intention to life; and the Full Moon is a wonderful time to create and work with a mantra.

To begin, read through this blog post, taking note of the qualities of this particular Full Moon. Write down a few ideas or possibilities as you skim the blog post. This form of brainstorming can invoke an intuitive awareness, a part of you perhaps wanting to release or create something new in your life. Full Moons support release and letting go; the fullness of moon symbolizes it holding, at its fullest stage before emptying to fill back up again.

Once you have an idea of the themes, qualities, or possibilities you wish to work with, write them out. Free flow with the words, let them fall onto the paper in various combinations, playing with different combinations and patterns of words.

Incorporate pieces such as “I am ______” (open, at ease, letting go, etc.) into your Moon Mantra. Think of what you want to create, let go of, or change.

Next, allow the words to form a phrase. Let it be easy to remember, positive, and pleasant to say out loud. Trust your body – if you say the words and experience constriction, it is likely not the right phrase for you. On the other hand, if you begin to exhale, relax your shoulders, and feel a sense of lightness, you are likely tuning in to the subtle energy of the phrase and experiencing a beautiful match for you.

Examples of Moon Mantras based on the Aquarius Full Moon:

I allow myself to see with my soul….

I let go to create space….

I trust my inner guidance….

It is safe for me to shine my light….

Once you have your Moon Mantra, write it down as a reminder, placing it in areas you will see it. Say it out loud and consider using it as a journal prompt if you feel gilded to do some journaling and burning.

*Reminder: each full moon can impact you 3 days before the full moon and 3 days after the full moon. Full Moons are always powerful times for releasing and letting go. Try creating a ceremony or honoring of this time to embrace the energy that this time has to help you create space in your life for what you truly desire.

As always remember, you are not alone in experiencing this phase. Be mindful of this when encountering others over these next few days. Send them love as they are also shining a light on themselves and may be extra sensitive during this time. The next full moon is on September 2nd; it is known as the Full Corn Moon.
